Resorption is when tooth structure begins to dissolve away. If caught early enough, teeth with resorption can be saved. There are different types of tooth resorption and some include, cervical resorption, internal resorption, and external resorption.

Cervical resorption is when the tooth structure around your gums begins to dissolve away. This may be caused by dental trauma, past orthodontic treatment, internal tooth whitening, or unknown reasons. This type of resorption has 4 stages. If caught early enough it can be treated by a surgical procedure, root canal treatment, or both.

Internal resorption is when the pulp (nerve) of the tooth becomes inflamed and enlarges to dissolve away the root from the inside out. This may be caused by a dental infection or trauma. Again, if caught early enough, root canal treatment alone is sufficient to save the tooth.

External resorption is when the root of the tooth begins to dissolve from the outside in. When this occurs in adult teeth it may be caused by a dental abscess, or trauma. Depending on the extent, this type of resorption can be treated by root canal treatment.

With all types of resorptions, the earlier the disease is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. Regular dental checkups, digital x-rays, and 3D imaging can be utilized to diagnose resorption and ultimately save your tooth.
